What porcelain is made from

Porcelain is a fired ceramic made from mineral-based raw materials such as clay, feldspar and sand. These ingredients are finely milled, pressed into shape and fired at extremely high temperatures, creating a hard, dense surface that resists everyday scratches, stains, heat, household chemicals, and UV-related color changes. Porcelain also absorbs very little water—no more than 0.1 to 0.5 percent under the Tile Council of North America’s industry definition. Soap residue and surface soil still require routine cleaning, but porcelain’s dense, hard surface makes regular care easy.

How porcelain compares with acrylic, composites, quartz and tile

Many companies promising a one-day bath update rely on acrylic, fiberglass-reinforced plastic or composite wall systems. These molded products are light and suited to standardized shapes, but they do not deliver the same hard, fired surface as porcelain. Acrylic and polymer composites can flex, scratch and show wear differently. Their printed patterns, seams and edge details also create a different visual and aesthetic result from large-format porcelain.

The Mohs scale measures scratch resistance from 1 for talc to 10 for diamond. Many porcelain slabs are reported around 7 to 8. Quartz, the mineral, rates 7, while the performance of an engineered-quartz surface varies from just under 6 to 7 depending on its resin content and finish. Acrylic and resin-rich composites are considerably softer. Exact ratings depend on the specific product, but porcelain’s hard surface gives it an advantage against the everyday scratching and wear common in a working bathroom.

Porcelain also brings hard surface performance to vertical surfaces without requiring the thickness and mass of a countertop-style quartz slab. Thin large-format panels are easier to use across shower walls, and TRÜbath’s engineered backing adds protection and strength where oversized porcelain normally needs the most care. Hardness is not the same as impact strength: unsupported porcelain can chip or crack from a concentrated blow, which is why TRÜbath’s complete panel construction and proper installation matter.

The smooth, low-absorption surface is simple to wipe clean, although every bath surface still needs regular care and the manufacturer’s approved cleaners.
